Working with Reach Records’ 1K Phew on “LIFE”: Lessons Learned

Securing a featured verse from 1K Phew—an established artist on Reach Records carrying national weight signature flows, and an unmistakable voice—was a milestone we anticipated with immense excitement. We entered the collaboration with clear creative intentions and high expectations for what a joint effort could achieve.

When we first envisioned our single "LIFE," we knew we wanted a record that bridged heartfelt, faith-grounded message music with top-tier urban energy. Bringing on a notable figure in Christian hip-hop felt like the natural progression for Kenrod & Amberrae.

In the studio and on the track itself, the creative delivery met every artistic expectation. 1K Phew delivered exactly what he is renowned for: a sharp, authentic, and charismatic verse that elevated the bounce and texture of "LIFE." His vocal presence slotted seamlessly into the sonic world we crafted, resulting in a finished master that sounded professional, radio-ready, and deeply aligned with our message. Sonically, the track stood tall, representing a seamless fusion of our melodic R&B/pop harmonies and his dynamic hip-hop cadence.

Yet, as independent artists know all too well, the music is only half the battle; the release ecosystem is where songs sink or swim. Evaluating the complete life cycle of the release brings honest realities to the surface: did the entire project meet our expectations? Not really. A major guest verse requires serious upfront capital, contractual negotiations, and rigorous logistical coordination. When the financial ledger was balanced against our streaming, sync, and engagement returns, we found ourselves spending significantly more than we recouped.

The most noticeable gap occurred across promotional alignment and marketing rollouts. In modern digital music, a collaboration should represent an active cross-pollination of two audiences. We believed and hoped that there would be mutual investment in social push, co-branded marketing assets, and interactive promotional content. Unfortunately, that extra exposure push never materialized. We were hoping for stronger partnership and organic visibility from 1K Phew, but the support on the marketing side fell short, leaving the promotional weight almost entirely on our shoulders.

For any independent duo pouring personal funds, countless late nights, and focused creative energy into a project, that lack of post-release engagement is disappointing. When you allocate substantial budget toward a featured artist, you expect the association to bridge your music to a wider demographic. The objective was never purely algorithmic metrics—it was about expanding our reach so the gospel message carried in "LIFE" could impact hearts that otherwise might never have discovered our ministry. When a partner steps back once the track is recorded, that potential bridge narrows considerably.

Despite the marketing setbacks, our core foundation never wavers because our ministry is not dictated by social media shares. Our primary mission is to spread the gospel, point listeners toward Christ, and provide comfort through uplifting music. At the end of the day, "LIFE" accomplished that exact purpose: the word went out, seeds were planted, and eternal truths were delivered through rhythm and melody. Saving souls and offering authentic hope remain our ultimate markers of fulfillment, and no promotional deficit can cancel out the spiritual impact of an honest record.

This journey with "LIFE" served as an invaluable masterclass in music business strategy, budget allocation, and the realities of feature placement. We gained critical discernment regarding how to structure future contracts, where to direct promotional funds, and how to protect our return on investment. It reinforced our understanding that true, sustainable artist growth cannot rely on borrowed audiences or big-name guest features; it has to be built brick by brick through dedicated listeners who connect directly with who Kenrod & Amberrae are as artists and ministers.

Ultimately, we are genuinely grateful for the opportunity to work alongside 1K Phew. He is an undeniable talent, and the record itself stands as a high-water mark of creative collaboration in our discography. But would we collaborate with him again down the road? Probably not. The experience gave us the clarity, maturity, and business acumen we needed for our next chapter. We walk forward with our heads held high, sharper in our craft, and more committed than ever to creating authentic, life-giving music on our own terms
